ABOUT THE PRINT
About The Artist: Edward Mitchell Bannister was a Black Canadian–American Tonalist painter known for pastoral landscapes. Self-taught and active in Boston’s abolitionist movement, he overcame racism to gain recognition, winning first prize at the 1876 Centennial. A founder of the Providence Art Club, he mentored artists and promoted art in New England communities.
