ABOUT THE PRINT
About The Artist: Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828–1901) was a Black Canadian–American Tonalist painter known for pastoral landscapes inspired by the Barbizon School. A self-taught artist and abolitionist, he overcame racial prejudice to win acclaim, notably first prize at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial. He co-founded the Providence Art Club and mentored younger artists.
